All You Need Is Enough Rope (a light-hearted look at cottage life)
by Christine Mander
Introduction: Robert Thomas Allen
Cover and 32 illustrations Michael Eddenden

Imagine sitting in the middle of a lake, sharing a shaky styrofoam raft with your new fridge, while the fastest boat on the water comes right at you! Such a problem is commonplace to the Rivers family during their seven summers of roughing it in cottage country. It's the whole story, from clearing the land to forever fixing Old Unreliable (their water pump). There are darker themes- a threat of environmental pollution, and a night lost in the bush - but mostly it's the hilarious story of a family growing up, based on the memories of a misadventurer and cottage-owner extraordinaire! (Note: Cottagers
love this book!)
About the Author
Christine Mander was born in Saskatchewan, moved to England as an infant with her parents, and returned to her native land in the Fifties, with a South African bride groom. She was Program Coordinator for the Oakville (Ontario) Public Library. Her other books are Emily Murphy: Rebel, a biography of Canada's first woman magistrate, and a thriller - A Bid for Murder.
About the Illustrator
Michael Eddenden grew up in Burlington Ontario, and attended McMaster University. He writes, "Four years of anthropology learning that the Hopi Indians had a concept of time which foreshadows Einstein's theory of relativity, and that a near naked tribe in Africa find a hat, worn only by married women, to be wildly erotic, did not lead to a job." This was remedied when Michael later studied architecture at the University of British Columbia. He has also served as a newspaper editor.

Reviews
"Good family fun... priceless drawings. If you can't get to a lake, buy this book and sit under a tree with a good drink and enjoy yourself."

Max Braithwaite

"Mander's sense of humour and her enjoyment of the ridiculous survive unscathed. A book that all cottagers should read."
