One Man's War
by Stuart Waters

176 pages, trade paperback, $9.95
ISBN 0-919676-27-8

Captain Stuart Waters served in the British Army throughout World War Two, in Norway, Gibraltar, and - above all - North Africa, during the grueling "Desert Campaign". He saw war at its most terrifying, enduring Stuka and tank attacks and getting stranded behind enemy lines, but this is not the focus of the book.
One Man's War is about people, and it is filled with anecdotes, often hilarious (including that jaunt behind German lines!). Here is warfare through the eyes of a peculiarly gentle - but brave - combatant, to whom the most memorable element was the friendships he made.
About the Author
Stuart married Helen in 1939, and they hardly saw each other for six years! After the war they moved to Canada, where they taught at Hillfield College in Hamilton Ontario. Helen took time off to raise three children: Jonathan, Christopher and Elizabeth. Stuart continued teaching for many years until his retirement.

Reviews
"One Man's War is a fine reminiscence of a period that, for all its hellishness, was also a time of friendship, adventure and keen excitement, all of which Waters recounts fondly."

And a Second: "Stuart Waters' book written in a simple and unadorned style, at times deceptively so, lightened by touches of whimsy, but is packed with details of daily life in an artillery unit during the war."
